Biography of Weezer
Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Rivers Cuomo, Weezer mixed the off-kilter punk-pop of The Pixies with a new wave pop sensibility and arena rock beat, becoming one of the surprise success stories of 1994. Cuomo was still in college when their self-titled debut record came out in the summer of 1994. Produced by Ric Ocasek, the record shot to popularity once MTV began playing the incessant "Undone (The Sweater Song)" heavily. The band followed through with another hit single, "Buddy Holly," at the end of the year. In the spring of 1995, the album had gone platinum; the band's third single, "Say It Ain't So," became their third straight modern rock hit in the summer of 1995. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
