Biography of The Standells
A '60s Los Angeles-based rock group. The Standells had the greasy garage-band sound down to perfection, and their pounding ode to Boston's "Dirty Water" was a huge hit in 1966. Prior to hitting national playlists, the band had recorded for MGM and Liberty and appeared in the 1964 movie Get Yourself a College Girl. Signed to Capitol's Tower subsidiary, drummer (former Mousketeer) Dick Dodd's snarling vocal and pounding backbeat made "Dirty Water" (produced by Ed Cobb of The Four Preps, who were about as far opposed to The Standells' approach as could possibly be) their top-seller. Three subsequent 1966-1967 Standells singles also charted, but the quartet fell apart before the end of the decade. ~ Bill Dahl
