Biography of The Spinners
The Spinners began as a typical doo-wop group in the late '50s, scoring a national hit for Tri-Phi Records in 1961. When that label was bought out by Motown in 1965, the group floundered, being relegated to session singers, chauffeurs and janitors. They were brought to Atlantic Records in 1972 by Aretha Franklin where they hooked-up with Philly producer Thom Bell. This match created a string of pop and soul hits that lasted well into the '80s. Members included Henry Fambrough, Bobbie Smith, Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Deorge Dixon (replaced by Chico Edwards in 1962, by G.C. Cameron in 1967, Phillipi Wynne (deceased) in 1971, and John Edwards in 1977). ~ Rick A. Bueche
