Biography of The Ramones
With a crisp, militaristic shout of "1-2-3-4" introducing a sonic barrage the likes of which had never been heard, The Ramones declared that rock & roll had become fatuous and ostentatious, embarrassingly prissy, and way too serious. They cranked up the volume, took out the stuffing, and let it be known that henceforth endless solos, pseudo-poetry, and concept albums were being relegated to the dustbin, to be mocked and scorned as digressions. Perhaps all this quartet from Queens, NY, was really doing was reminding those who had strayed that simple is often best, that the first rockers had the right idea (just get a guitar and make some noise with it), that one should not have to study in a conservatory to play rock. The Ramones stripped it back to the basics, a few chords and some d-u-m-b words, and before they knew it they'd been congratulated -- and blamed -- for inventing something called punk-rock.They kept it up for nearly two decades, staying true to their original vision. Upon the release of their 1995 album Adios Amigos, they announced that they were breaking up after a final tour. Maybe they weren't able to rid the world of the scholarly approach to rock after all, but they sure "shook it up good." ~ Jeff Tamarkin
