Biography of The Meters
The top instrumental band in New Orleans during the late '60s and much of the '70s, both on their own and as a session crew (formed in 1966). Keyboardist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist George Porter Jr, and drummer Zigaboo Modeliste played on numerous sessions for producer Allen Toussaint before they climbed the R&B charts themselves in 1969 with "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Cissy Strut" on the Josie label. They remained with Josie into the early '70s, issuing more funky hit instrumentals such as "Look-Ka Py Py" and "Chicken Strut" before spending the mid-'70s with the major labels Reprise and Warner. The quartet went their separate ways in 1977 but sometimes re-form for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. ~ Bill Dahl
