Biography of The Commodores
The Commodores got their start by being the opening act for the Jackson 5. Largely through the prolific lyrics of Lionel Richie, the band broke out nationally in the mid-'70s. Their initial success was mainly with dance tunes, but in the late '70s Richie began turning out love ballads such as "Easy," "Still," and "Three Times a Lady." His departure for solo stardom crippled the band, but not before they had one more huge success with "Nightshift" in 1985. Today the group plays state fairs and oldies venues. Members included Lionel Richie (replaced in 1984 by J.D. Nicholas), Thomas McClary (who left in 1984), Ronald LaPread, William King, Walter Orange, and Milan Williams. ~ Rick A. Bueche
