Biography of The Clovers
One of the earliest doo-wop vocal groups, The Clovers were formed in the late '40s in Washington, DC. Original members were Buddy Bailey, Matthew McQuater, Hal Lucas Jr, and Harold Winley. Bobby Mitchell replaced Bailey by the time the group was signed to the fledgling Atlantic label in 1950. The Clovers racked up 13 Top Ten R&B hits between 1951 to 1954, all showcasing their solid harmonies and unerring rhythmic verve. After a few years between hits, they scored again in 1959 with their biggest, "Love Potion No. 9." The Clovers went their separate ways by 1961, but they will always be revered by hardcore doo-wop fans the world over. ~ Cub Koda
