Biography of Stan Getz
At 16, he went on the road with Jack Teagarden's band and never looked back. The most gifted and famous of The Brothers -- tenormen who emulated Lester Young and most of whom were alumni of Woody Herman's Second Herd -- Getz established himself with a beautiful solo on Herman's "Early Autumn" (1948). Though his personal life had its ups and downs, his music was consistently brilliant. Highlights include the association with guitarist Jimmy Raney; his great success with the bossa nova (in the 60s, when there was no other instrumental music on the hit charts); his wonderful collaboration with Eddie Sauter on Focus, a unique composition created for Stan; and his final triumph over a debilitating illness in the duets with pianist Kenny Barron (People Time). Getz was above all a supreme melodist, who could make even a mediocre song sparkle, but he was also a marvelous improviser and master of high-speed invention. As a saxophonist, he was without peers. ~ Dan Morgenstern
