Biography of Son Volt
Following the acrimonious dissolution of the influential alternative country trio Uncle Tupelo, the group's singer/guitarist Jay Farrar formed the roots-rock unit Son Volt. Joined by onetime Tupelo drummer Mike Heidorn along with brothers Jim (bass, vocals) and Dave Boquist (guitar, banjo, fiddle, lap steel), Farrar set about authoring the group's 1995 debut record, Trace, an edgy, stark affair which earned virtually unanimous praise from the critical community as well as scoring a minor hit with its first single, "Drown." Son Volt returned in the spring of 1997 with the album Straightaways; Wide Swing Tremolo followed a year later. ~ Jason Ankeny
