Biography of Slowdive
Comprised of Neil Halstead (guitar, vocals), Rachael Gowell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), and Simon Scott (drums), Slowdive formed in England in 1989. Slowdive fit into the trance-pop scene of the early '90s, combining ethereal vocals with highly processed and distorted guitar. Creation Records signed the band, releasing their debut album, Just for a Day, in 1991. Signed to SBK in the U.S., the band had a tumultuous relationship with their American label; most of the arguments were over marketing and promotion. The American release of the band's second album, Souvlaki, came six months later than its U.K. release, which became a major point of contention between the band and its label, SBK. The group parted with the label in 1994. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
