Biography of Sebadoh

After leaving Dinosaur Jr., Lou Barlow formed Sebadoh. Instead of working like a traditional rock band and collaborating on each song, Sebadoh acts as a backing band for the material of each individual band member. Consequently, their albums can be a little schizophrenic, covering all kinds of indie guitar-rock from R.E.M.-style pop to Dinosaur-style melancholy and Sonic Youth sonic explosions, all recorded in ragged lo-fidelity. Fortunately, each member is a talented songwriter, managing to wear their influences without sounding exactly like any of them; they are one of the most unique bands of the early '90s. Sebadoh's artistic breadth makes them critical and cult favorites; their jagged playing and oblique songwriting guarantees that they will never cross over into the mainstream, but that has never seemed a concern of the band. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
