Biography of Saint Etienne
Formed by U.K. rock journalist Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs in late 1988, St. Etienne became one of the leading British dance-pop bands of the early '90s, combining elements of house, techno, pop, disco, and hip-hop in a melodic, hypnotically rhythmic music that not only was popular in dance clubs, but had crossover appeal. Considering their detached, intellectual approach to pop, it's not surprising that the group has experienced its greatest success in Europe -- particularly in England -- and has only been a cult band in America. After a series of female singers, Sarah Cracknell became their permanent lead vocalist during the recording of their debut album, 1991's Fox Base Alpha. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
