Biography of Run-D.M.C.

The most famous exports from Hollis, Queens, NY, expanded the boundaries of rap in ways Grandmaster Flash could only imagine. Through their early singles they built up a devoted street following and, without ever diluting their music, managed to bust their grooves into the White pop mainstream. They've lost their edge in the '90s but their influence is still felt. Run-D.M.C. bounced back from the aesthic graveyard in 1993 with Down with the King. The album linked them with the hip-hop generation that had grown up admiring them, and the trio also sported a new look (shaved heads) and philosophy (Born-Again Christians). The title track was a huge hit and the disc ended speculation that they were finished on the hip-hop scene. ~ John Floyd
