Biography of Ravi Coltrane

The son of John and Alice Coltrane, Ravi was not even two years old when his father died. He was in his early 20s when he seriously started playing jazz and, although his father's music was a slight influence, Ravi Coltrane actually sounds closer to Branford Marsalis and Joe Henderson. He picked up valuable experience playing with Elvin Jones' band during 1991-1993, and went on to perform as a sideman with many top musicians including Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, and Cindy Blackman. ~ Scott Yanow
