Biography of Peter, Paul & Mary
This extremely popular trio came out of New York's Greenwich Village in the early '60s and hit the top of the charts with their cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," putting the previously unknown songwriter on the map in the process. More middle-of-the-road than their peers, the group's sound, lofted by the striking alto (and still-phenomenal good looks) of Mary Travers made them acceptable to and influential with middle America. Following their breakup in the early '70s, they've reunited, retaining name recognition and a healthy if more limited audience in a different political climate, singing about Nicaragua, El Salvador, and the world's problems. ~ Bruce Eder
