Biography of Perry Como
Starting out as a barber in his hometown of Cannonsburg, PA, Como gained national attention with the Ted Weems Orchestra in the mid '30s. After World War II, he signed with RCA Victor as a solo artist and started amassing hits, 42 of them in the Top Ten between 1944 and 1958. His laidback, laconic delivery and persona served him well when he became the most successful "band singer" in TV's early days, hosting his variety show for over eight years. Changing over to whimsical novelty material, he still had hits when rock & roll first started dominating the charts. After a 25-year layoff, Como started performing live again in 1970, to devoted audiences, and has maintained a modest touring schedule to this day. ~ Cub Koda
