Biography of O.V. Wright
Recently named by Robbie Robertson as one of his all-time favorite vocalists, O. V. Wright emerged from the Memphis gospel scene to cut one '60s soul classic on Goldwax; "That's How Strong My Love Is," also recorded by Otis Redding, has been covered by The Stones and Tom Petty. Wright then teamed with Memphis producer Willie Mitchell on the Backbeat label for a string of gospel-soul beauties including the "jury-of-love" tale "Eight Men, Four Women" and the self-penned "You're Gonna Make Me Cry." His dark, desperate style and pleading, rough-hewn vocals invite comparison with his contemporary Percy Sledge. Sadly, he died in 1980 of a heart attack. Wright's work has always been appreciated in the UK; hopefully, recent reissues will win him wider recognition in the US. ~ Christine Ohlman
