Biography of Maxine Brown
An underrated '60s R&B chanteuse from New York responsible for the original "Oh No Not My Baby." With an early gospel background, Brown waxed her first secular hit, "All in My Mind," for the tiny Nomar label in 1960, and quickly encored with "Funny." Switching to Wand Records, Brown recorded some fine uptown-style R&B, including the charming and often-covered "Oh No Not My Baby" in 1964. Teamed with labelmate Chuck Jackson, Brown scored another hit the following year with a duet revival of Chris Kenner's "Something You Got." Brown later recorded for a variety of firms into the early '70s. ~ Bill Dahl
