Biography of Mahalia Jackson
Born in New Orleans, Mahalia Jackson grew up in the Baptist Church, though she also admired blues singers such as Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. Jackson made Chicago her home beginning in 1927, where she also began a lifelong association with gospel writer and performer Thomas A. Dorsey. She earned the title "Gospel Queen" with her 1947 version of "Move on up a Little Higher." Tours of Europe and television appearances in the United States followed on the heels of this success. She remained one of gospel's most visible figures until her death. ~ Kip Lornell
