Biography of MIMS
Skilled in making hit records, Manhattan-based rapper Sean Mims, known as just MIMS, could obtain heavy rotation early on in the 2000s within various locales around the country, though mainly in his home city; however, the business end of his career initially held him back from crossing over to the majors. A native of uptown neighborhood Washington Heights, MIMS originally was inspired to produce and DJ when his mother bought him his first DJ equipment at 13 years of age. After his mother died giving birth to his little sister, he had to learn to do things on his own, and so naturally, next to DJing, he began spitting rhymes too. Eager to turn his passion into business, MIMS' first hit song actually broke through in Canada. {"Love ‘em All,"} a collaboration with Canadian MC Choclair, was the lead single for the hip-hop ensemble Baby Blue Soundcrew's 2001 compilation Private Party, Vol. 2. Emblematic of his self-rearing past, MIMS preferred working with independent record companies, but even after he made another local hit track, "I Did You Wrong," in 2003, he was still not receiving his end of the deals from the various business ventures he helped to create. After establishing his own American King imprint, MIMS' created yet another radio hit, "This Is Why I'm Hot," whose Southern bounce generated approximately 1000 spins a week around the country in 2006 and early 2007. The ensuing remix with reggae/dancehall artists Cham and Junior Reid garnered lots of airplay as well. After an intense bidding war, MIMS finally landed on EMI/Capitol in late 2006. ~ Cyril Cordor
