Biography of King Floyd
New Orleans vocalist King Floyd had some big soul hits in the early '70s, including the chart-topping "Groove Me," which also landed him his only pop hit, peaking at number six. Floyd began singing at age 11 and debuted professionally in 1961. He spent much of 1961 and all of 1962 in the Army, getting discharged in 1963. He moved to New York and stayed until he relocated to Los Angeles in 1964. He began recording for Original Sound in 1965, then went back to his hometown in 1969. After "Groove Me," Floyd showed that he was no fluke, with "Baby Let Me Kiss You" reaching number five R&B. "Got To Have Your Lovin" didn't fare as well, but "Woman Don't Go Astray" returned him to chart prominence, reaching number three. Floyd kept recording for Chimneyville through 1976, getting one more mild hit that year with "Body English." ~ Ron Wynn
