Biography of Jimmy Page
James Patrick Page is one of the most successful rock guitarists to come out of England in the '60s. Born in Heston, Page was playing recording sessions in London studios while still in his teens, and his guitar can be heard on many of the records made there in the mid-'60s. Page turned down an initial offer to join the Yardbirds, then changed his mind and worked with the group until its demise in 1968. He then formed Led Zeppelin, which was the predominant hard rock/heavy metal band in popular music until 1980. After the group split, Page was less active, though he formed another hard rock quartet, the Firm, in the mid-'80s. He released his own solo album in 1988. In 1993, Page released his collaboration with former Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale, Coverdale/Page. While it featured some fine playing by Page, it was hampered by lackluster songs. Following a tour, the duo broke up. Page reunited with Robert Plant in 1994 for an MTV Unplugged television show and an album, No Quarter, both of which featured revamped versions of Led Zeppelin songs. They also launched a tour that ran into 1995. ~ William Ruhlmann
