Biography of Jean Knight
Knight filed her claim to fame in 1971 with her sassy #1 R&B hit, "Mr. Big Stuff." Knight had previously recorded for Houston producer Huey Meaux, but it was her 1970 sojourn to Malaco Studios in Jackson, MS, that would make her a star. There she cut the teasing "Mr. Big Stuff," a #2 pop smash on Stax. Immediate followups included the similarly funky "You Think You're Hot Stuff." Knight returned to prominence in 1985 with her cover of Rockin' Sidney's wildly popular zydeco novelty "My Toot Toot." In 1997 she released Shaki de Boo-Tee. ~ Bill Dahl
