Influenced equally by singer/songwriters such as Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell as well as traditional R&B singers like Aretha Franklin, India.Arie has forged a unique, organic sound that falls safely within the category of "neo-soul", alongside artists such as Maxwell, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. India.Arie first garnered attention by co-founding an Atlanta artist's collective, Groovement/Earthseed, that played several shows at Lilith Fair. India.Arie soon caught the eye of Kedar Massenburg, a leading producer of artists such as Erykah Badu and D'Angelo.
