Biography of Homesick James Williamson
Homesick James (born John A. Williamson) remains active in the '90s, a superb bottleneck guitarist and surving master. The grace, flair and power he displayed during his prime made a major impact on many players, especially Magic Sam. He's reportedly Elmore James' cousin, though that's not authenticated. His own work mixes the fingerpicking style of early stars like Blind Blake, but reflects James' dramatic phrasing and rippling power. He taught himself guitar as a child, and began playing everywhere from taverns to streets and clubs in 1920. He traveled with Blind Boy Fuller, Sleepy John Estes and Frank Stokes through the South in the '20s before moving to Chicago in the '30s. Since then, he's played with numerous greats, among them Buddy Doyle, Big Joe Williams, John Lee Williamson (Sonny Boy I), Elmore James, Floyd Jones, Lazy Bill Lucas, Albert King, Bill Broonzy, Baby Face Leroy, Roosevelt Sykes and many other others. He's led various bands and recorded for Victor, Vocalion, Chance, Flair, Chief, Fire, Chess, Atomic, Colt, USA, Spivey, Bluesville/Prestige, Advent, Bluesway, Big Bear, and for Tone Cool in the '90s. There have also been steady club and festival appearances since the '30s. ~ Ron Wynn
