Biography of Heather Nova
Sultry singer/songwriter Heather Nova was born Heather Frith in Bermuda in 1968. After spending her childhood nomadically sailing about the West Indies in her family's 40-foot yacht, she relocated to Providence, Rhode Island in 1987 to study film. After first composing a number of instrumental pieces for use in her student films, she soon turned to songwriting, drawing inspiration from the work of Patti Smith and Lou Reed; a move to New York followed, and after travelling to London in search of a recording deal, in 1990 she issued the EP These Walls under her given name. As Heather Nova, she remained in London, ultimately joining forces with producer Youth, who in 1993 issued Glow Stars, an ethereal collection of demos, on his own Butterfly label. After a pair of live releases, 1993's Blow (recorded in London) and 1994's Live From the Milky Way (cut in Amsterdam), Nova issued her full-length debut Oyster in 1995. Siren followed in 1998. ~ Jason Ankeny
