Biography of Grover Washington, Jr.
Washington is one of the most commercially successful saxophonists in jazz history. A versatile reed specialist, he is equally at home on soprano, alto, or tenor sax, and has recorded on flute and baritone sax. A much more creative improviser than his hit-making saxophone competitors, Washington has had hits with almost everything he has done, since his first album (Inner City Blues) for Kudu in 1971. His biggest albums, Mr. Magic (Kudu) and Winelight (Elektra), have also spawned hit singles. His recordings for Kudu, Motown, Elektra, and Columbia are mostly commercial in content but, given that, Washington's saxophone work is always first-rate and a good distance in front of his closest fusion rivals. ~ Bob Porter
