Faye Adams/Joe Morris Orchestra
Biography of Faye Adams
The heavily gospel-influenced chanteuse scored three chart-topping R&B hits in 1953-1954. From Newark, NJ, Adams joined Joe Morris' band in 1952 as featured singer. A year later, she was a star, thanks to her moving ballad "Shake a Hand" on Al Silver's New York-based Herald label. The song has proven an R&B standard, covered by the likes of Little Richard and Ruth Brown. Two more number-one R&B hits followed in rapid succession: "I'll Be True" (covered by Bill Haley & His Comets) and "Hurts Me to My Heart." Adams later moved to Imperial, and stirred up some action with "Keeper of My Heart" in 1957, before returning to the church. ~ Bill Dahl
