Biography of Elvis Costello
The most evocative, innovative, and wildly gifted songwriter since Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello is a remarkably brilliant and complex personality. From the angry young mannerisms of his initial work through the sophistication of his later stuff, Costello has confounded and intrigued audiences with songs that offer highly personal takes on love and politics, often (as on Armed Forces) blurring the divisions between those elements. The stylistic diversity of his oeuvre reflects his refusal to limit himself within the structures of pop music. And while that determination has rendered some of his more recent work insufferably erratic and stuffy, his fascinatingly deft lyricisms remain some of the most individualistic and significant of the rock era. Although there are two best-ofs in his catalog, his strengths are most apparent on the original long-players. ~ John Floyd
