Biography of Doris Troy
A gospel-tinged belter from New York City, Doris Troy made one of the early '60s' finest soul singles, "Just One Look," in 1963 for Atlantic. It reached number three on the R&B charts and was also a Top Ten pop hit. Troy had been a gospel singer before turning to secular music. She earned a hit as a songwriter when Dee Clark recorded "How About That." Troy was working as a usher at the Apollo when she met James Brown. He got her a session at Atlantic that led to "Just One Look." Troy later went to England, where she was signed to the Beatles' Apple label. She also eventually recorded for Capitol, but wasn't able to duplicate the success of "Just One Look." Troy was a background vocalist on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon LP. ~ Ron Wynn
