Biography of Dixie Chicks
The band, from Dallas, TX, features Robin Lynn Macy on guitar and lead vocals; Laura Lynch on acoustic bass and lead vocals; Martie Erwin on fiddle, viola, and harmony vocals; and Emily Erwin on banjo and harmony vocals. The band has issued two releases, "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans" (1991) and "Little 'Ol Cowgirl" (1992).The band plays a traditionally-flavored mix of western and bluegrass music. They have recorded songs by composers such as John Ims, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, and Patsy Montana, as well as a number of traditional tunes. Their releases have even included songs by Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, and even some traditional Irish music. Robin has also written and co-written a number of their tunes, and Laura And Martie have co-written a couple.Although I think that some people saw the band as a novelty -- an "all-girl" band playing western swing and bluegrass -- they are excellent musicians. The CD's have a "fun" feel, but the music can stand on its own.The Erwin sisters were quite young when the band formed -- I think Emily was something like 16, and Martie was a couple of years older (this is recollection of an interview / studio session a few years ago on KERA inDallas). Robin And Laura are late 20's, early 30's.I don't believe the band is still together -- I understand that Robin Macy felt the band was moving away from their western / bluegrass roots toward a more mainstream country flavor, and so she left to work on her own.
