Biography of Dionne Warwick

She began with gospel group, The Drinkards and earned a Ph.D. in music education at the University of Hartford. She influenced Luther Vandross, Melissa Manchester and others. During the '60s, when most Black singers were displaying blues/gospel roots, Dionne made her name by stylish, commerical pop songs, displaying her vocal power in "technical" rather than "emotional" prowess. ~ Bil Carpenter
