Biography of Dillinger
Lester Bullocks AKA Dillinger was a seminal stylist in DJ/toaster circles during the '70s. His blazing, witty and irreverent style, sometimes comedic, sometimes tragic or poignant, was featured on many singles as he moved from simply recyling Big Youth and U-Roy's style and developed his own gripping approach. Dillinger began as a disc jockey on Prince Jackie and El Brasso's sound systems' during the early '70s. He enjoyed his first hit with "Freshly" in 1974, cutting it for Yabby U. Later came singles for Augustus Pablo, Joe Joe Hookim and Coxsone Dodd. Dodd Issued the LP Ready Natty Dreadie in '75 and '76, establishing Dillinger as a star, while Kim issued the second album containing the classics "Cocaine In My Brain" and "Crank Face," a superb duet with Trinity. Dillinger tried to repeat the formula with "Marijuana In My Brand," which did reasonably well. But as audience interests shifted during the '80s, Dillinger's fortunes plummeted. He eventually left music, but returned with "Say No to Drugs" in 1990. ~ Ron Wynn
