Biography of Descendents
One of Southern California's finest hardcore-era bands, The Descendents liberally sprinkled pop on their typically megavolume ceaseless-rush-of-guitar sound. Also, they featured a terrific lead singer in Milo Aukerman. The Descendents released their first record, the 7-inch Fat EP, in 1981. After its release, Aukerman left the band, yet the group continued performing with guitarist Ray Cooper handling lead vocals. Milo Goes to College, their first full-length album, appeared in 1982. Following its release, drummer Bill Stevenson joined Black Flag and the band disappeared for a few years. In 1985, The Descendents reunited, with Aukerman, Stevenson, Cooper, and bassist Tony Lombardo; this lineup's first album was I Don't Want To Grow Up (1985). The following year, the band recorded Enjoy! with a new bassist. For 1987's All, only Milo Aukerman and Bill Stevenson remained in the band's lineup. After its release, Milo left the group and the band evolved into All under the direction of Stevenson. The Descendents' records remain essential listening for fans of the late-'70s/early-'80s post-punk mosh scene. ~ John Dougan & Stephen Thomas Erlewine
