Biography of The Count Five
This San Jose quintet scored one of the biggest garage-psychedelic hits of the '60s with "Psychotic Reaction," a derivative but riveting American adaptation of the Yardbirds' guitar rave-ups. The single reached number five in late 1966, but the group was unable to come anywhere close to duplicating its success. Their sole album and collectible follow-up flop singles, like "Psychotic Reaction," emulate the Yardbirds, Rolling Stones, and Who with less memorable results, although they have their moments. ~ Richie Unterberger
