Biography of Chuck Jackson
Chuck Jackson first hit as a member of The Dell-Vikings (1957-1959) before striking out on his own with a string of soulful pop classics ("I Don't Want to Cry," "Any Day Now") on Wand, a subsidiary of Scepter, during the early '60s. With a delivery by turns sophisticated and hoarsely sexy, he was part of a group of singers, Ben E. King among them, whose gospel-tinged style predated and influenced the singing of '60s soul men like Wilson Pickett. Jackson continues to be very active; in 1992 he received the prestigious Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. ~ Christine Ohlman
