Biography of Chris Isaak
Unlike most modern singers whose work recalls vintage rock & roll, Chris Isaak manages to capture the subtle energy and tension of that music without parodying its mannerisms or excesses. "Wicked Game" -- and indeed the entire Heart Shaped World album from which it was drawn -- is among the better rock & roll recordings of the past decade. There is an undeniable similarity between Isaak's vocals and the work of Roy Orbison, but it goes far beyond range or timbre. Although Orbison is remembered largely for his operatic ballads, his music was grounded in the blues and country mix that was prevalent at Sun Records, where he began. Similarly, Isaak brings a biting intensity and dramatic tension to his vocals. And despite its modernity, Isaak's instrumental backup is surprisingly restrained and minimalist.Heart Shaped World has an album cover you can trust. The loneliness of Isaak's vocals is reflected in the front cover photo. And the '50s roots feel of his music is telegraphed in the rear cover portrait. This recent collection is his best work. It features a vocal/guitar/bass/drums sound with minimal concessions to modern production techniques. You've probably heard "Wicked Game" on the radio. Now it's time to look more deeply. You'll surely enjoy the experience and in the process, and you will also discover something about the roots of contemporary rock. ~ Hank Davis
