Biography of Bing Crosby
An American institution, Crosby started as part of The Rhythm Boys trio with bandleader Paul Whiteman, but he soon went on to major solo success. The first singer to truly understand the microphone (then a relatively new invention), he single-handedly revolutionized pop-music vocalizing by using it as if he were performing to an audience of one. Great success in both records and movies followed, with Crosby's laidback, easygoing style serving him well in both fields. With his roots in Louis Armstrong and Al Jolson, Crosby's laconic phrasing and uncanny ability to sing "in the pocket" have been matched by few singers before or since. ~ Cub Koda
