Biography of Arlo Guthrie
Arlo Guthrie, the son of Woody Guthrie, came to prominence in 1967 with the release of his sly 20-minute anti-war/tale of woe song monolog "Alice's Restaurant." Along with other songs on this album, Chillin' of the Evening, Guthrie established himself as a distinguished voice in the rock community. His ability to create extended social commentary in the middle of otherwise strong songs set him apart from other socially oriented singer/songwriters. His stage manner was exceptionally engaging and he was ailing to allow his material to change with the times. He had a number of mainstream hits including the rock & roll "Comin' into Los Angeles" and Steve Goodman's wistful ballad of the American railroad, "City of New Orleans." He had continued to simultaneously embrace the work of his father and contemporary songs by touring and recording with Pete Seeger and/or along with Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert. He has conintued to make strong albums of traditional and contemporary songs. ~ Richard Meyer
